
Bruno Knychalla is a computational designer and architectural technologist specializing in large-format additive manufacturing for the built environment. He is Managing Director and Co-Founder of Additive Tectonics GmbH (since July 2020), a spin-off pursuing what he calls an “architectural revolution” through digitally designed and 3D-printed building components. In parallel, he is Managing Director and Development Engineer at the FIT Additive Manufacturing Group (since January 2018), where he heads the Large Format Manufacturing division in Lupburg, Bavaria — one of the global pioneers of industrial 3D printing, producing over 400,000 components per year.
Knychalla studied architecture in Munich, Paris, and Sydney, and completed a Master of Science in Architectural Technology at the University of Stuttgart (2015–2017), where he worked with the renowned ICD/ITKE institutes on robotically and drone-fabricated research pavilions inspired by moth-larva silk-weaving — a bionic, cyber-physical fabrication process that earned recognition including a BIM Award. He is also Founder and Board Member of CyberCraft e.V. (since June 2022), a non-profit promoting research and science in the cybercraft field.
His built work includes the eight-metre-tall 3D-printed retable for St. Laurentius in Altmühldorf — a complex aluminium- and gold-plated lattice sculpture combining digital design with additive manufacturing — and a series of architectural projects exploring resource-efficient, individualized, cradle-to-cradle 3D-printed construction. He is a frequent speaker on additive manufacturing in architecture at conferences such as PUZZLE X, Rapid.Tech 3D (where he hosts the “Bauwesen” panel), and the BE-AM Symposium, advocating “radically innovative” approaches that rethink construction from the ground up.
