The Computational Hive

Andrea Rossi is a computational designer and founder of The Computational Hive, a consultancy specializing in design automation for architecture and engineering. His work bridges research and practice, translating advanced computational design methods into real-world tools. He is the developer of Wasp, an open-source toolkit for combinatorial design widely used in academia and practice.

Alongside his consultancy work, he is a researcher at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he focuses on computational strategies for material reuse of artifacts with non-standard geometry. He holds a PhD with distinction from TU Darmstadt and has previously worked at the University of Kassel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, and ETH Zurich, while also teaching at several international universities. He is a board member of the Fieldstations e.V., where he is co-hosting the “Anthropocene Pedagogies in Architecture” platform.

The Computational Hive The Computational Hive is a Vienna-based computational design consultancy helping architecture, engineering, design, and fabrication teams turn complex spatial challenges into clear, usable digital workflows. We develop custom tools, configurators, automation pipelines, and design systems that connect advanced computational methods with practical project needs, from early design exploration to fabrication-oriented processes.

Founded by Dr. Andrea Rossi, The Computational Hive builds on more than a decade of research and practice in computational design, digital fabrication, and open-source software development, including the widely used Grasshopper toolkit Wasp. Alongside client work, the studio develops open knowledge and open-source tools for the wider AEC community, with the aim of making advanced design technologies more accessible, adaptable, and useful in real-world practice.
