Jakob Timpe is a German architect and product designer based in Berlin. Since 2023 he has been Professor for Design Fundamentals and Product Design (Fachgebietssprecher) at the weißensee kunsthochschule berlin, having previously taught product design at the OTH Regensburg from 2012-2023, where he helped build the industrial design programme.
Born in Würzburg, Timpe studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin (1987–89) and the Technical University of Darmstadt, graduating with a diploma in 1994. Early career stations included architectural practices in Leipzig (Matthias Leistner), Munich (Stephan Braunfels), Cologne (Joachim Schürmann) and Barcelona (Bonell+Gil). From 1999 to 2004 he was Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Architecture at TU Darmstadt, where he began designing furniture, lighting, and interior and exterior spaces for European clients. In 2005 he was awarded the one-year fellowship of the German Academy Rome, Villa Massimo, and in 2006 he opened the jts+o studio in Berlin.
In 2012 he founded the independent design label vondingen. His clients have included Alias, Atelier Alinea, Goethe-Institut, Marset, Nils Holger Moormann, Resol, serien.lighting and GTZ/European Commission. In 2018 the monograph Un/Applied Arts was published as a first comprehensive overview of his work.
