Prof. Matthias Böttger is a German architect, curator, and design researcher based in Basel, Switzerland. He studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Karlsruhe and the University of Westminster in London, and worked as an architect in Cologne, Berlin, and Paris before moving into academia via the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, the University of Stuttgart, and ETH Zurich.
In 2008, together with Friedrich von Borries, he served as general commissioner and curator of the German contribution “Updating Germany” at the Venice Architecture Biennale. From 2012 to 2017 he held the chair for Sustainable Architecture + Future Tactics (SAFT) at Kunstuniversität Linz. Since 2017 he has been Professor at the Basel Academy of Art and Design (HGK FHNW), where he currently serves as Head of the Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures (IXDM) and Head of the BA Prozessgestaltung (Process Design) programme. His work sits at the intersection of architecture, design, art, and public space.
